I'm trying to create a similar lighting effect, but for the life of me I can;t figure out how to do it. I'm a beginner, so please explain.
It's really a fairly simple shot. As the other answer said, a light was placed off to camera left with some height. I do not believe a snoot was used as the light pattern is too wide. My guess would be a barn door fixture was placed on the light, closed down to shape the light to cover the model as desired. Metering is then done with an external light meter where the light strikes the model for proper exposure.
You say you are a beginner. I don't know how much of a beginner, but if you are trying to get this type of lighting with any kind of on camera flash... forget it. You need proper studio lighting with "light modifiers", which can include soft boxes, umbrellas, barn doors, and snoots. You then MANUALLY set the exposure on your camera to properly expose for your given lighting.
Here is a shot I did which is basically the same principle. I mounted a strobe to camera right, slightly behind the model. I chose to use more light than in the photo you supplied, but I could have just as easily used less power for the same type of look as in your photo. This was done with a studio strobe, manually test fired to get a reading with my meter, then camera exposure set according to meter readings. I used a barn door attachment with grid screen on the strobe. This is still a rather "harsh" light pattern. A soft box or umbrella would give much softer light, but it would also be more diffused with less pattern control.
